LINDA'S SEPTEMBER TIPS

Information from the U.S. Department of Justice indicates an American home is burglarized every 8 seconds. Keep your home from becoming one of these statistics with these simple tips.

Never keep a spare key under the door mat, on top of the door frame or in a planter. Good burglars know all the typical hiding spots.

Don’t leave your garage door opener in an unlocked car.

Don’t leave a note on your front door saying you aren’t home.

Don’t give out personal information to a stranger on the phone. It could be a burglar posing as a telephone solicitor or survey taker.

Don’t give your house keys to a stranger. Remove your house key before handing your key ring to a parking attendant or mechanic.

If your telephone number is listed, consider asking your phone company to delete your address. This will make it harder for potential burglars to call to see if anyone is home.

Keep bushes and shrubs beneath windows low to keep burglars from hiding behind them.

Eliminate dark spots around the house by installing lighting fixtures on the house or landscape lighting. Motion-sensitive flood lights are effective, but make sure they don’t shine into your next door neighbor’s bedroom.

Place a metal rod or piece of wood in a sliding glass door track, install vertical bolts or “pin” the track by putting a screw into the upper track, protruding about a quarter-inch. These measures will help prevent burglars from forcing the door open or lifting it off the track.

Consider installing stronger glass in vulnerable areas (laminated or tempered glass or plexiglass).

If you have a burglar alarm system, advertise the fact with signs in conspicuous locations.
