A VISUAL DIARY OF MY LIFE

I moved into my existing home 27 years ago and immediately painted huge graphic designs on my living and dining room walls. The designs were very contemporary (for that time) in splashes of brown, orange and gold. Because they were visible to the outside through our large windows, they became somewhat of a drive-by attraction, regularly causing passersby to stop and gawk from their cars. The walls matched my deep brown carpet that covered my beautiful hardwood floor. The look was BOLD.

Next came country. I was part-owner of a craft shop, so I made wooden country crafts for the shop and myself. Down came the bold graphic designs and up went country wall paper with furniture to match. Every wall was covered with “stuff.” The look was BUSY.

Tiring of that look, I went for a minimalistic clean look. The walls and woodwork were painted light and most important, the brown carpet was gone and my beautiful hardwood floors were in tact. The décor on my walls was sparse and I felt like I could breath. The look was CLEAN.

Now I would say I am more eclectic, with overtones of Pottery Barn and touches of contemporary. I am using bright colors, lots of photography and large artwork. I am also adding plantation shutters to my windows, which have not had any coverings for years. The look is COUNTRY CLUB CASUAL.

Change is good. It often reflects how we are living and experiencing life at the moment. It is almost a visual diary of our lives. It will be interesting to see where my life and experiences take me. But one thing I know, my home will be a reflection of who I am.

HER HOME magazine is a great resource as you sort out the many decisions you make in your home and record the visual diary of your life.
