LINDA'S SUMMER TIPS

Use a good pair of binoculars to check wood shakes - without having to climb up to your roof. Remember, it’s important to pressure wash wood shingles every three to five years. Replace damaged shingles and then treat the entire roof with an oil or water-based preservative.

Never stake a tree unless there is plenty of flexibility...
for the trunk to sway to and fro with the wind. Don’t put rocks against the trunk of a tree or shrub. When the rocks heat up in the summer, the soil can become overheated and damage roots.

Reduce the risk of break-ins...
by installing impact-resistant glass in all basement windows (an access point often used by burglars) and in any location within 42 inches of a door lock. (This will make it more difficult for thieves to break the glass and reach in to unlock the door.)

Ask your insurance agent whether you will receive a discount for security items such as a burglar alarm, deadbolt locks or a water turn-off monitor. You may also receive discounts if you purchase your auto and/or life insurance from the same insurer.
